In this interview, Butch shares some of his insights and inspirations, as well as a handful of his favorite books, and leadership lessons. Butch has coached a number of very successful debate teams, and we chat considerably about the impact these experiences have on the kids who participate in the teams. We also talk about how students share in the learning equation, often in the role of teacher to the teacher. Butch also shares his thoughts on the line that teachers need to draw with engagement in social media, especially when it pertains to current students.

“I had four absolutely wonderful teachers at Bracken County High School…they were cutting edge before their time…they were doing things in the classroom that we now do [commonly] to keep kids engaged…It wasn’t the old chalk-talk–stand in front of the room and talk to the chalkboard while students took notes and went home and memorized…if you weren’t getting it by reading, you were going to get it by acting it out.”
